Asif Hassam · CTO, Zaio Institute.

Q1 · the practical
In your first 90 days at Zaio, what's one task AI saved you hours on that you didn't expect?
Q2 · the warning
What's the most common mistake you've seen junior team members make with AI?
Q3 · the habit
If you were 19 again and entering the workforce tomorrow, what AI habit would you start today?

Quick map · the 4 D's

Anthropic researchers named the 4 skills of AI fluency.

We touch each as we go. Free 5-lesson course is the take-home if you want the depth.
D
Delegation
Setting goals and deciding whether, when and how to engage with AI. Like knowing when to ask the group chat vs Google it yourself.
D
Description
Effectively describing goals to prompt useful AI behaviors and outputs. Like Uber Eats: "no onions, sauce on side" beats "one burger please."
D
Discernment
Accurately assessing the usefulness of AI outputs and behaviors. Like spotting a fake WhatsApp voice note before you forward it.
D
Diligence
Taking responsibility for what we do with AI and how we do it. Like driving — the GPS picks the route, but YOU get the ticket.

PHASE 00 · STUDENT NOW

Before your first job, AI is your patient tutor.

Four moves you can run THIS week — for your modules, your assignments, your study group. No job hunt required.
📖
Study anything — 3 ways at once
Paste a concept you don't get. Ask for it explained simply, then at exam depth, then with an analogy you already know. Three angles = the one that clicks for YOU.
"Explain [topic] 3 ways: (1) like I'm 12, (2) at university exam depth, (3) using a football / shopping analogy."
📑
Past papers → infinite practice
Paste one past-paper question. Ask Claude to generate 5 similar ones at the same difficulty. Mark your answers against its model answers. Most students never do this.
"Generate 5 questions like this one, same difficulty. After I answer, mark each / 10 with notes."
👥
Group projects that don't suck
Drop your group's WhatsApp / Teams transcript into Claude. Get a clean action list with owners + deadlines. End the "who said they'd do what" arguments forever.
"From this chat: action items with owners + deadlines. Flag anything unassigned. List what we still need to decide."
🎙️
Lecture → study guide in 5 min
Record the lecture (where allowed). Get the transcript. Paste into Claude. Output: structured notes, key terms with definitions, 10 quiz questions for self-test.
"Turn this transcript into: (1) bullet notes by topic, (2) key terms + 1-line definitions, (3) 10 self-test questions with answers."

You are an expert career coach. Write me a 200-word cover letter for this job:

[paste the job description here]

Here's me: I'm a [year of study] student at [uni]. I'm strong at [2-3 skills]. The 3 things I most want this employer to know are: [1, 2, 3].

Match the company's tone. No clichés. End with one concrete question I should ask in the interview.

PHASE 02 · LOOK READY

Don't look lost in your first 90 days.

Four moves that make seniors say "this junior gets it" before week 3.
📝
Meeting notes that don't suck
Record on your phone (with permission), drop the transcript into Claude, ask for action items + owners + dates.
"Summarise this meeting. Pull every action item, who owns it, and the deadline. List open questions separately."
📚
Ramp fast on anything
Your team uses an acronym you don't know. A tool you've never opened. A regulation that's new. Ask Claude for the 5-bullet brief.
"Explain [thing] like I'm a smart graduate. 5 bullets, then 3 questions I should ask my manager."
✉️
Write in your boss's tone
Forward 3 past emails from your manager. Ask Claude to match the tone for your draft. Suddenly your Slack messages read 2 years more senior.
"Here are 3 emails my manager wrote. Draft my reply to this thread in the same tone — same level of formality and length."
🔍
Industry research in 10 min
Your boss asks "what are our competitors doing?" Paste 5 article URLs into Claude, get a synthesised 1-pager. Cite everything.
"Compare these 5 companies on [dimension]. Output as a table. Flag where sources disagree."

Beyond chat · the leap most students miss

Chatbot is an intern. Agent is an employee.

Same brain. Different permissions. Totally different output.
Chatbot
💬
The intern in the chat box
Answers your questions. Drafts text you copy-paste. Cannot leave the chat — can't touch your files, send your emails, or check job boards for you. Everything we did on slide 8 was chatbot work.
Examples: ChatGPT · Claude.ai (browser) · Gemini
Agent
🦾
The junior employee you hired
You give a goal. The agent opens browsers, reads your files, fills forms, sends drafts, tracks responses. Reports back when done. Runs while you sleep.

PHASE 03 · STAND OUT

3 agents that compound your edge from week 1.

You'll hire these three before you ever hire a person on your team.
AGENT 02

The honest part · don't skip this

Three ways AI will embarrass you.

And what to do instead. SBF's discipline is your edge here — you verify, you don't trust blindly.
RISK 01
🤥 Hallucination
AI invents facts, fake quotes, and citations that don't exist. It sounds confident doing it. Like that one friend who confidently gives wrong directions.
DiligenceVerify every specific claim. Especially numbers, names, citations, dates.
RISK 02
⚖️ Bias
AI absorbed the internet — including its prejudice. It can amplify what's wrong about race, gender, geography, class. Like the TikTok algorithm — feeds you what people like you watch. Sometimes that's fair, sometimes not.
DiscernmentQuestion outputs about people. Diversify your sources. Notice what's missing.
RISK 03
🚩 Plagiarism / detection
Submitting AI work as your own = academic fraud. Turnitin's AI detection flags students every week. Some get expelled. Same rule as copying a friend's assignment — the system catches it, the consequence is the same.
DiligenceUse AI to draft + improve YOUR thinking. Never to replace it. Disclose when you're allowed.
The test: "Would I be embarrassed if my professor — or my new boss — saw this exact prompt?"
