5 Rewriting Techniques That Actually Drop Your Turnitin Score
Tested methods to reduce AI detection flags when rewriting content for academic submissions.
Why Most Rewriting Advice Doesn't Work
The internet is full of advice about "humanizing" AI text. Use shorter sentences. Add personal anecdotes. Change the vocabulary. Most of it misses the point entirely.
Turnitin's AI detection doesn't look for specific words or sentence lengths. It analyses statistical patterns in how words are arranged -- something called perplexity and burstiness. AI text has low perplexity (very predictable word choices) and low burstiness (consistent sentence complexity). Human writing is messy, unpredictable, and varies wildly in complexity.
So the question isn't "how do I make AI text look human." It's "how do I actually introduce the kind of unpredictability that humans naturally produce."
Technique 1: The Argument Flip
Take the AI's output and argue the opposite position first, then come back to the original point. This forces you to actually think through the logic rather than accepting the AI's framing.
Example: If the AI wrote "Social media has had a predominantly negative impact on mental health," start by writing why social media has been positive, then pivot. The resulting text has genuine intellectual texture that AI rarely produces.
Technique 2: The Specificity Injection
AI writes in generalities. You have specific experiences. Replace every general claim with a specific example from your coursework, lectures, or reading. Instead of "Research has shown that..." write "In the 2024 meta-analysis by Chen et al. that we covered in week 6..."
Technique 3: The Question-Answer Reframe
Restructure AI paragraphs as questions you're answering. Instead of a declarative paragraph, write "The key question here is whether X actually causes Y -- and the evidence is more complicated than it looks." This mirrors how humans actually process complex ideas.
Technique 4: The Messy Draft Method
Write your first draft badly on purpose. Misspell things. Use informal language. Leave notes to yourself like "[need citation here]" and "[this paragraph is weak, fix later]." Then clean it up in passes. The revision history looks authentically human.
Technique 5: The Voice Transplant
Read your favourite author's style for 10 minutes, then write. Your prose will unconsciously absorb some of their patterns -- unusual word choices, sentence rhythms, structural quirks. This produces genuinely distinctive text that no AI model would generate.
Which Techniques Work Best Together
Combine Technique 1 (Argument Flip) with Technique 2 (Specificity Injection) for essays. Use Technique 4 (Messy Draft) for longer pieces where you need a revision trail. Technique 5 (Voice Transplant) works best for creative or reflective writing.
