5 Free Subscriptions Every Student Can Claim in 2026 (with your SA university email)
Step-by-step apply links for GitHub Student Pack, Cursor Pro, Notion Plus, Figma Education, and Perplexity Pro — all free with your UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UJ, UP, TUT, CPUT, or Unisa email.
Your university email is worth more than you think
If you're a registered student at any SA university, your @myuct.ac.za or @students.wits.ac.za or @sun.ac.za email is basically a free software subscription you haven't activated yet.
The software industry runs on a simple deal: give students free access, hope they fall in love with the tool, then charge them when they get a job. That deal is good for us. Five of the tools your Computer Science, Design, Engineering, BCom, and Journalism degrees actually need are free right now, today, for anyone with a valid student email.
Combined retail price across the five: roughly R4,000 per year. You pay nothing.
This guide walks you through exactly how to claim each one, in the order that makes the others easier.
Who qualifies
You need three things:
- A
.ac.zaemail (or international.edu/.edu.xx) - Proof of current enrolment (usually a student card, enrolment letter, or your Peoplesoft/Student Services portal screenshot)
- 30 minutes to fill in five forms
Every SA university I've checked works: UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UJ, UP, TUT, CPUT, NMU, Rhodes, UKZN, UFS, NWU, Unisa, DUT, WSU, UniVen, and the Sol Plaatje crowd too. TVET college students also qualify for most of these — scroll to the FAQ if that's you.
The claim order (this matters)
Start with GitHub. Once GitHub verifies you, several other benefits unlock automatically through the Pack, which saves you repeat verifications. Here's the order:

1. GitHub Student Developer Pack — the one that unlocks everything else
What you get: Access to 100+ paid developer tools for free. The full list is at education.github.com/pack, but the highlights: JetBrains IDEs (normally $69/year each), a free .me domain from Name.com, Canva Pro, DigitalOcean credit, MongoDB Atlas credit, Microsoft Azure credit, and the GitHub Copilot subscription (worth $10/month).
Why start here: Once GitHub verifies you as a student, other providers in the Pack skip their own verification — they trust GitHub's. You do the hard verification once and unlock dozens of services.
How to claim:
- Go to education.github.com/discount_requests/application
- Sign in with your GitHub account (or create one first at github.com)
- Add your school email to your GitHub account under Settings → Emails, and verify it
- Back on the application, select "Student" and pick your university from the dropdown
- Upload proof of enrolment — a photo of your student card works, so does a screenshot from your Peoplesoft / Oracle Student Centre / TUT iEnabler showing your name and current year
- Submit and wait. Most SA students get approved in 24–48 hours. Some wait up to a week.
Watch out: If your school email was issued in the last 14 days, GitHub sometimes flags it as new. Wait two weeks and re-apply if you get rejected on first try.
Pro tip: Link your .ac.za email to your GitHub account even if you already have a personal email there. That's what GitHub checks against, and it also unlocks free private repos and extra storage automatically.
2. Cursor Pro — the AI editor that writes code with you
What it is: Cursor is a fork of VS Code with Claude, GPT-4, and other frontier models wired into the editor. You type a comment, it writes the code. You highlight a function, it rewrites it. You ask it to find a bug, it finds the bug. It's not an autocomplete — it's more like pair-programming with a senior developer who never gets tired.
Retail price: $20/month, or $192/year on the annual plan.
Student price: Free for a full year. Renewable each year you're still a student.
How to claim:
- Go to cursor.com/students
- Click "Get Started" and sign up with your school email
- Complete SheerID verification — it'll ask for your name, university, and date of birth, then confirm against enrolment databases. SA universities are in the system.
- If SheerID can't auto-verify, upload your student card or enrolment letter manually
- Once approved, download Cursor from cursor.com/download and sign in with the same email
Tip: Cursor supports importing your VS Code extensions, settings, and keyboard shortcuts in one click. You don't need to rebuild your setup.
Free tier vs Pro: The free tier gives you a few hundred completions per month on a slower model. Pro gives you 500 fast completions + unlimited slow completions on GPT-4 / Claude Sonnet / Claude Opus, plus the Cmd+K inline edit and the full Composer agent mode. Pro is the difference between "nice autocomplete" and "this wrote the whole feature."
Example workflow for a COS221 data structures assignment:
// Select your buggy implementation and press Cmd+K
// Prompt: "This binary search tree's delete() is returning null
// when deleting the root. Find the bug and fix it, without
// changing the function signature."
Cursor will find the issue, explain it in a side panel, and patch the code. You learn the concept and ship the fix.
3. Notion Plus — the workspace your whole degree fits inside
What it is: Notion is a note app, a database, a task manager, and a wiki in one. The Plus plan (what used to be called "Personal Pro") gives you unlimited file uploads, unlimited page history, and full AI assistance built into every page. I use one Notion for lecture notes, assignment tracking, reading summaries, and project wikis.
Retail price: $10/month for Plus + AI, so roughly R2,280/year.
Student price: Free. The catch: you only get the Plus tier, not the AI add-on. If you want Notion AI, you still pay $8/month for that. Honest truth: Claude or ChatGPT is better than Notion AI anyway, so skip it.
How to claim:
- Go to notion.com/product/notion-for-education
- Click "Get Plus free"
- Sign up or log in with your
.ac.zaemail (this is the step that matters — Notion verifies based on the email domain) - That's it. The upgrade is automatic once the domain is recognised as educational.
Watch out: If you already have a Notion account under your personal Gmail, you need to change your primary email to your student email first, under Settings → My account → Email. The Plus upgrade follows the primary email.
Pro tip: Create one workspace per year of your degree. Inside each workspace, build a database called "Modules" with columns for lecturer, weighting, exam date, and assignment deadlines. Link every lecture note, assignment draft, and past paper to its module row. By exam time you have one central place for everything.
4. Figma Education — the design tool Apple and Google actually use
What it is: Figma is where product design happens in 2026. Apple's marketing team, Google's UX team, Airbnb's entire design org, and pretty much every startup you've heard of runs design in Figma. It's browser-based, collaborative in real time, and free for the basic tier. The Professional tier adds unlimited files, team libraries, version history, and dev mode.
Retail price: $15/month per editor, roughly R3,420/year.
Student price: Free for the whole Education plan (Professional tier features), renewable every 12 months while you're enrolled.
How to claim:
- Go to figma.com/education
- Click "Apply for free Education access"
- Sign in with your school email, or sign up fresh
- Answer three short questions: what you're studying, how you'll use Figma, and roughly when you graduate
- Upload proof — student card photo works, or a PDF of your enrolment letter
- Approval is usually within a few hours to a day
Tip: If you're in BCom, Journalism, or anything non-design, this still applies. Figma is how you build wireframes for a final-year project, design a CV that doesn't look like everyone else's Canva template, or prototype a startup idea for an entrepreneurship module.
What you actually use it for as a student:
- Build the UI mockups for your final-year project before writing a line of code
- Design your personal portfolio site and export it as SVG / PNG
- Run a design sprint with your group — everyone edits the same file at once, no "latest_v3_FINAL_final.pptx" nightmare
- Use the built-in library of free icons, illustrations, and UI kits (FigJam is also free)
5. Perplexity Pro — research that cites real sources
What it is: Perplexity is what Google Search would look like if it gave you a proper answer with citations instead of ten links and three ads. You ask a question, it searches the live web, reads the top sources, and writes you an answer with clickable references to every claim. Pro unlocks longer answers, access to GPT-4 / Claude / Sonar models, and the Spaces feature (basically NotebookLM for web sources).
Retail price: $20/month, $200/year.
Student price: One full year of Pro, free, for any student with a verified .edu or .ac.za email.
How to claim:
- Go to perplexity.ai/backtoschool
- Sign up with your school email (or log in and add your student email to your existing account)
- Click "Verify with SheerID" and complete the form — same process as Cursor, and if you already did Cursor's, this usually takes 30 seconds
- Once verified, Pro activates on your account and you see a green "Pro" badge next to your name
Heads up: If the back-to-school promo link is seasonal and shows a different page, try perplexity.ai/pro and look for the "Students" section, or contact their support with a screenshot of your student card.
Best use for essays and research assignments: In Perplexity, use the "Academic" search focus (the filter icon next to the search bar). It restricts sources to peer-reviewed papers, academic journals, and arXiv. You get citations you can actually use in a reference list, not random Medium posts.
Example prompt:
In academic focus: What does the 2024 literature say about the impact
of large language models on undergraduate writing quality? Give me five
sources I can cite, with author names and publication years.
You get a written answer with five numbered citations, each linking to the original paper. Drop those into your reference list and you're done.

What to do if you get rejected
A few patterns I've seen with SA students:
"Your email isn't recognised as an educational address." This hits students at some private tertiary institutions (Varsity College, Boston City Campus, etc.) whose domains aren't always in SheerID's database yet. Fix: email the provider's student support, attach your student card and a letter of enrolment, and ask for manual verification. Figma and Cursor both have "manual review" fallbacks, you just have to ask.
"Your enrolment couldn't be verified." Happens when SheerID checks against an outdated database. Fix: upload your student card as a clear photo (both sides if the back has the current year sticker) + a screenshot of your Peoplesoft / student portal showing your current registration. That combo works 9 times out of 10.
"Your account was created too recently." GitHub and Cursor both want to see a bit of account history. Fix: use the account for a week — make a commit or two to a personal GitHub repo, open Cursor and save a few files — then re-apply.
If you don't have a .ac.za email yet
This is for first-year students who haven't been through registration yet, or gap-year folk who plan to start in July.
Some providers accept unofficial proof. GitHub, Figma, and Cursor all have a "no school email" path where you can upload a letter of offer or a proof-of-registration screenshot. Notion and Perplexity are strict about the email domain — you'll need the real thing first.
Workaround: if you've been accepted but haven't got your email yet, ask Student IT at your institution when the email will be activated. At most SA universities, that happens within a week of you paying your initial fees.
Renewal reminders
Two of these (Cursor, Perplexity) renew once per year. Figma renews every 12 months. GitHub and Notion are good for as long as you're enrolled.
Done when: you get the confirmation emails from all 5 providers. Save them in a Gmail label called "Student Perks". When your renewal reminders come through next year, repeat this guide.
What's next
- Combine these tools into a workflow: draft your assignment in Notion, rewrite it with Cursor (for code assignments) or Claude, fact-check with Perplexity's academic mode, design your final cover page in Figma, push your project to a GitHub repo on your
.medomain from Name.com. - If you want the actual apply links pasted into your DMs so you don't lose this page, comment STUDENT on the Instagram carousel that ships this guide.
