Rewrite AI — How to Use It the Right Way

Use Rewrite AI's custom-trained model to humanize AI-assisted drafts so your submission passes Turnitin, GPTZero, and Originality.

By Akhil Boddu · AfricanTechBro

One-line summary: Use Rewrite AI's custom-trained model to humanize AI-assisted drafts so your submission passes Turnitin, GPTZero, and Originality.

Prerequisites: None. Works with any AI-assisted draft. Free plan available at rewriteai.com.

Time to read: 6 minutes

Why most humanizers fail in 2026

Turnitin, GPTZero, and Originality don't just look for AI words. They model sentence structure, rhythm, and how ideas connect. Basic humanizers — Stealthwriter, Quillbot, the free Chrome extensions — do the same thing: swap synonyms, shuffle a few words, call it human. Detectors see straight through it because the architecture of the writing hasn't changed.

Rewrite AI is different. Most humanizers use prompt engineering on top of ChatGPT or Claude — the same models the detectors are trained to catch. Rewrite AI built their own model, trained specifically on thousands of human-written texts. It does deep rewriting, not paraphrasing. Their tested bypass rate across Turnitin, GPTZero, Originality, and ZeroGPT is 99% — versus 40-80% for other humanizers.

What you need to know before starting

Free plan: 500 words per month, 300 words per input — enough for a short paragraph or two.

Basic plan ($5.99/mo): 7,000 words/month, 500 words per input — covers most essay sections.

Pro plan ($19.99/mo): 30,000 words/month, 1,500 words per input, Advanced Turnitin Bypass Engine — if you're working with long essays or submitting frequently, this is the one.

The right workflow (step by step)

Step 1: Write your draft first

Don't paste raw ChatGPT output into the humanizer. That gives you AI structure going in — and even a 99% humanizer is working against a harder problem. The detector flags the skeleton of the writing, not just the words.

Instead: use ChatGPT or Claude to help you think, then write the paragraphs yourself.

Prompt that works:

I'm writing an essay on [topic] for [course].
Here's my argument: [your 2-3 sentence idea].
Give me a bullet point outline — key points only, no full sentences.

You write the paragraphs from the outline. Your voice, your structure. That's what you humanize — not raw AI output.

Step 2: Paste into Rewrite AI in chunks

Go to rewriteai.com and paste paragraph by paragraph, not the whole essay at once.

Why chunks? Two reasons:

  1. The free plan caps at 300 words per input (Basic at 500, Pro at 1,500)
  2. Smaller inputs give the model a tighter context to work with — the rewrites are more focused

Paste, hit Humanize, wait a few seconds.

Step 3: Pick the version that sounds like you

Rewrite AI gives you multiple output variations. Most people grab the first one and move on — that's the mistake.

Read each version out loud. The one that doesn't make you stumble is closest to how you naturally talk. Turnitin builds a writing profile across your submissions. The closer the rewrite is to your actual voice, the harder it is to flag.

If none of the options feel right, pick the closest one and manually change 3-4 phrases to words you'd actually use. That layer is what pushes you from 85% to 98%.

Step 4: Check it before you submit

Rewrite AI includes unlimited AI detection on all plans — use it. You can also run it through gptzero.me or originality.ai for a second opinion.

Thresholds to know:

Score What it means
0-20% AI Safe. Submit.
20-40% AI One more manual pass. Focus on the highlighted sentences.
40%+ AI Don't submit yet. Rewrite the flagged sections by hand.

Most SA universities flag above 20%. Check your assignment brief — some departments specify a lower threshold.

Step 5: The manual pass (don't skip this)

Rewrite AI does the heavy lifting. The last 20% is you.

Take whatever sentences are still flagged and rewrite them by hand — not in AI, just you in a Google Doc or your notes app.

Three things to change in flagged sentences:

  1. Sentence length — AI writes in even rhythms. Break one long sentence into two, or combine two short ones.
  2. Word order — Flip the structure. "The model was trained on essays" becomes "Essays are what the model trained on."
  3. Personal detail — Add something only you would know. "In my third-year research methods class" reads differently to a detector than "in an academic setting."

What not to do

  • Don't humanize a full ChatGPT essay. The AI sentence structure is baked in before the humanizer touches it. Start from your own draft.
  • Don't use the same variation every time. If every assignment you submit sounds identical post-rewrite, Turnitin's profile of your writing will look suspicious. Mix it up.
  • Don't skip the detector check. The 99% bypass rate is tested on their platform. Your institution may use a different detector version or threshold. Check before you submit.

The honest version

Rewrite AI is the best tool I've found for this — and I've tested a lot of them. It works because it doesn't use ChatGPT under the hood like most tools do. But it's not a cheat code. You still need to write the draft, pick the right variation, and do a manual pass. The tool gets you there faster and more reliably than anything else. The work is still yours — this just makes sure it reads that way.
